A cholecystectomy is a clinical procedure that removes your gallbladder, which is a pear shaped organ located on the upper right side of your abdomen just below your liver. The gallbladder collects and stores bile, which is a digestive fluid produced by the liver.

A cholecystectomy is a common surgical procedure with a low risk of complications. You can usually go home the same week as your cholecystectomy. The gallbladder is usually removed during a cholecystectomy by inserting a tiny recording device and special surgical equipment through four small incisions in your abdomen.

This is known as a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. In some cases, the gallbladder may be removed through a single large incision. This is referred to as an open cholecystectomy.

What are the Advantages of Cholecystectomy Gallbladder Removal Surgery by Laparoscopy 1

Your doctor or surgeon will decide whether a laparoscopic or an open cholecystectomy is best for you. The laparoscopic method has a number of advantages:

    • There is less pain.
    • Reduced risk of complications
    • Scars and wounds are smaller.

    How Do you Prepare Surgery?

how do you prepare your surgery 1

    Medication and Food

Your surgeon may ask you to do the following to prepare for a cholecystectomy:

The night once your surgery, don’t eat anything. You may take a sip of water with your treatments, but refrain from eating or drinking for at least four hours before your surgery.

Stop using some medications and supplements. Inform your doctor about all supplements and drugs you are taking. Continue to take most medications as directed. Certain medications but also supplements may be discontinued by your doctor if they raise your likelihood of bleeding.

    Clothing and Personal Belongings

The majority of people go home the same day as their cholecystectomy, but complications can arise that necessitate one or more overnight stays in the hospital. Bring personal items such as your cleanser, comfortable apparel, and books or magazine articles to pass the time if you need to stay in the hospital.

    Other Safeguards

Find someone to drive and accompany you home. Request that a friend or family member drive you home and stay with you the first night after surgery.

    Laparoscopic (minimally invasive) Cholecystectomy

The surgeon makes four incisions are made in your abdomen during a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Through one of the incisions, a tube containing a tiny video camera is inserted into your abdomen. In the operating room, your surgeon observes a video monitor while removing your gallbladder with surgical tools inserted through other incisions in your abdomen.

If your surgeon is concerned about gallstones or other problems in your bile duct, you may be subjected to an imaging test, such as an X-ray or ultrasound. The incisions are then sutured, and you are taken to a critical care environment. A laparoscopy takes one to two hours to complete.

A laparoscopic cholecystectomy is not for everyone. In some cases, your surgeon may starts with a laparoscopic approach but later decide that a larger incision is required due to scar tissue from 1987 to 1991 or complications.

    Typical (Open) Cholecystectomy

The doctor cuts a 6 inch (15 centimeter) incision in your groin area below your ribs on your right side during an open cholecystectomy. Pulling back the muscle and tissue reveals your liver and gallbladder.

Your surgeon will then remove the gallbladder. You are taken to a recovery area after the incision is sutured. An open cholecystectomy typically takes one to two hours.
